A moving collection of stories, blending memoir and fiction, speaking out of and to the modern immigrant's experience in America. But D. Dee's writing also speaks to experiences common to many of us trying to care about politics without getting cynical; missing family and home; trying to make relationships; coping with everyday conflicts between the world as it is and the world as we would like it to be.

I had a very small hand in the creation of this wonderful collection, serving essentially as Dee's typist. English is his 3rd or 4th language. My role was to listen to him speak these stories and try to capture their vision and poignancy in the clearest English possible. His language, as he says, is simple. But the depth of his experiences and the richness of his imagination are anything but. My hope is that this collection goes into the world and serves notice of a quiet, insistent, and beautiful new voice in contemporary literature.Product details

Story of My Stories D Dee 9780615912738 Books Reviews
Story of My Stories is a wonderfully thoughtful compilation of work that is not only a pleasure to read, but a painfully relevant account of human stride and suffering. While often using simple words and seemingly accessible concepts, the topics engaged by this author are anything but simple, calling into question and pondering some of the most challenging topics of our modern world, and what it means to survive this world as an honest human being. Dee calls into question our understanding of love, war, poverty, discrimination, along with a host of other profound themes through playful and imaginative stories that leave us thinking long after the few moments they take to read.
In his ever-insightful essay "The Storyteller," Walter Benjamin writes, "the storyteller is the figure in which the righteous man encounters himself." I find that this book, Story of My Stories in many ways revives storytelling as that life force which someone like Benjamin so passionately defended. While our times are different from Benjamin's, we still are still faced with situations that diminish the value of human experience, that continually push us to place our material gains, our social status, or even our social image above the time we spend with others, above those moments of sharing a simple meal, listening to someone talk about what a friend of a friend has experienced. While operating on a number of different levels, this book asks us to imagine what it would mean to pause and really listen. On the one hand, the sensibility of this book is quite literary. It does make one reconsider the "art" of writing itself--its rich poetic language as well as its literary undercurrents offer much to consider about the crafts of the short story and the poem. The use of specific imagery and the juxtaposition or sometimes interweaving of stories about people from very different parts of the world, usually with disparate life experiences, is especially notable. In another sense, this collection has something of an intimacy; it gives one the sense of sitting at a table with an old friend, of someone who has experienced much in life, who has kept his eyes and heart open to the lives of others, alongside or at times despite his own suffering. In an effort to give voice to the everyday disparities and injustices of the world, to show them for what they are, but without moralizing, this collection takes one into the heart of those experiences that one doesn't really hear in the news. These stories record moments in the lives of people who often suffer great loss, including the loss of those closest to them. Many of these stories are also about those who find ways in their daily lives to resist those things that diminish life...through their work, their humor, their small acts of friendship. This book, with its commitment to poetry and with its testimony to a range of experiences, hits a note somewhere deep in the heart. It helps one to remember that people's lives and their stories do touch upon, and can even transform the lives of others. And not only that; this book reminds one that neither isolation nor injustice should be accepted as inevitable.
The author has a fascinating style of writing, combining simplicity and subtlety. The stories, mixing past and present, make this reader want more.
I love Dee's style of writing. He uses simple words to convey complex and profound thoughts.
All the previous reviews are right on; his stories do follow the reader.
Dee's too modest. He IS a writer; and a good one too!
I feel like anything I write will not do justice to this book. It will be wordy and sentimental. It will be the opposite of this book.
I can say that this work is so precious, that I want to write it all out by hand - over and over again, until I've swallowed every sentence.
The writing is delicate, but strong. The stories follow me.
It is written in a simple English, but, talks about the most complicated human’s relationship in today’s world.
It would be a very educational, for the people who are from the first world countries to read these stories to understand the differences and similarities between themselves and the people in the third world countries. Stories by themselves are beautiful, rich and … will stay with you forever.
I believe, it’s a must read for everybody; I am sure you won’t regret it.
Our book club read this book and I wanted to wait until we met before writing a review.
It has never taken me so long to read so small a book. Don't be fooled by the brevity, there is a lot to absorb here.
Another piece of advice, don't try to take it apart, just enjoy it, just let it happen.
I was happy to see it in our community library. This book transcends geography and culture.
