I love this author! I have the hardest time putting down her books, so glad she put a free one on so that I tried her out & found out what engaging, likable characters she creates- funny too, I laughed out loud several times reading this novel. The stories are a good length, she develops the relationship well & overall great job )
I picked this up as a Deal of the Day; it was a little outside my norm but I like a good historical romance so gave it a shot. The story was well written, the plot generally flowed well and I enjoyed the read and gave it a solid 3 stars. It was missing some key elements in my opinion. If you're a fan of sweet stories and don't like sexy romances, you'll probably be happy with the book. If you prefer a little more sizzle and bacon so to speak, you might not like this book. I'd rate this book G or PG except for one scene, which comes late in the book. Everything after that is soap opera style - references to sex but it all happens offscreen.
GAVE THIS BOOK 3 And 1/2 STARS. I Liked Alex but I just couldn't warm up to Sophie. She was deplorable to Alex by constantly arguing with him. Went way beyond bantering. Sophie was afraid of the dark but thought nothing of roaming about London to search library's and study's of her peers in the dark and alone. I am certainly glad there was an Epiloge to explain the idiotic way she reacted when Alex told her he loved her. Should have rented this one from the library.
I read this after reading the second book in the series, Tempting Fate, so I already understood some of the background. That may have affected how much I got into this one, but I'm not sure. Either way, I enjoyed this book, but not as much as the second book.
The premise was fun, clever even. Johnson is a good writer with effective prose & believable dialogue. The characters are interesting & likeable. What annoyed me most was the ending (not of the love story so much as the adventure part). It was kind of a letdown for me. The heroine annoyed me a bit toward the end, too. Part of me wanted the option to smack her, but she's back to normal in the second book.
Overall this is a good book, & I enjoyed reading it. It's a strong start to a 4-book (I think) series. Again, I recommend the second book more, but reading them in order may be prudent. Either way, I'll probably give book 3 a try sometime in the near-future.
I read the second book first Tempting Fate and enjoyed that so I'm not sure why I never looked at the other books in the series. I came across this one and decided to try it and I'm glad I did. The h is totally unconventional in that she has spent the last 12 years travelling around the world with her father. She has learnt some unusual skills like picking locks and throwing knives and is approached to spy on her cousin and some of his friends. The H is also approached to spy on the H's cousin and to woo the h in the process as a cover. The H is very attracted to the h from the start and he is a darling. The h could be a tad annoying at times especially with her stupid plan to marry for convenience. It was fairly obvious that she should have spoken to the H from the start. Anyway it was a good, entertaining story and now I'm going to read the rest of the books in the series.
This was such a supremely delightful, spirit-boosting, sharply written charmer. Until about the halfway point, this was an A+ (++++...!) read for me. Alas, my admittedly limited patience and I then encountered an all too familiar problem the plot and pacing started to lag, and some of the dialogue, characterization and themes started to lose their power to enchant as they became more and more "yes, yes, we get it already!" repetitive.
There's a wealth of wit and humor here---so much so, in fact, that even a wit and humor lover like I am found myself wishing that a LITTLE of the snark was cut in favor of a dash more emotional substance, but that's a minor nitpick. A slightly less minor nitpick is that the hero's characterization felt somewhat inconsistent. Alex is depicted initially as a very serious, reclusive loner who's obsessed with honor and duty----except, no, wait, he's actually a smooth, slickly charming and super-snarky rogue with tons of experience with, er, the wrong sort of women. I started off adoring him, and while he remained moderately likable throughout, I ended up more confused by him than enamored.
Our heroine's characterization struck me as sharper and more consistent. On paper, Sophie sounds like just the sort of Mary Sue who makes my eyes roll right out of my poor head spunky and smart and independent and charitable and fantastic at a zillion little things that most women of her time had no exposure to and all-around awesome. So why did I find myself loving her? Because the book wisely pokes some gentle, self-aware fun at Sophie's unique experiences and skills, which succeeds in making her more amusing than irritating. And, fortunately, Sophie is just impatient and restless enough to seem realistically flawed.
The plot includes some convoluted, rather randomly resolved spying and intrigue. The good news is that this provides a fun diversion for those of us who sometimes want our romances to be about more than just the romance. The not as good news? This element of the book is something of a mess, haphazardly plotted and weirdly paced. Still, I'm a sucker for thrillers and mysteries---(even the sloppily executed ones!)---so this facet of the book probably bugged me less than many of my fellow readers.
I know this review has contained its share of criticisms, but I can't emphasize enough just how much I enjoyed this writer's style and the book's overall tone. I've already bought nearly everything else she's written, and am confident that my minor complaints about plot, pacing and even characterization will continue to be overshadowed by the fabulously sharp dialogue, clever prose and smile-eliciting, mood-lifting charm.
Objective quality 3.75/5
Subjective enjoyment 4.5/5
Steam level About 1.5 or 2 (Only one actual sex scene)
