I enjoyed the Sam Jellicoe stories up until this one. The regency story was interesting and though it (by necessity for word count purposes, I imagine) was superficial and though it had some glaring anachronisms (e.g. acquaintances did not call each other by their first names in social settings, for example) I read it quite happily.
The Sam-Richard half was less easy to get through and I felt like the second half was a slog and didn't really tie in well with the first half even though there was the family connection, etc. Sam's secret-keeping was irritating, Richard's need for control was equally annoying and I soon didn't care what happened to either of them. Only loyalty to these characters as they were in books 1 through 3 carried me to the end of this story. The "mystery" portion was totally obvious and I was annoyed that two smart characters were blinded to the obvious and didn't even direct their usually well-honed suspicious nature in the right direction. Also, I believe I have had enough of Sam's need for an adrenaline rush through illegal activity. It was interesting before but that string has run out. In all, I think this is one that can be missed, even if you're already a fan of the series.

Great light romance reading. Great author.
I was very disappointed. This does not seem to be a part of the Sam series as advertised. Could have used that money to buy another book!
I love Sam and Rick's stories! A "bad" girl with a man who's no saint himself. Everyone familiar with the series or not will get a good story. I also loved that the 1st half of this book takes place in the distant past & the rest in modern times.
I love this whole series and wish there were more. This one starts off with the main characters as they were several generations earlier and then jumped to the present. A cursed gem stone is the premise for all the bad things happening. The story kept moving very well...couldn't put it down!
At first I was not sure where Enoch was going with this book. The first half we get to meet Rick's ancestor and the fiery woman he decides to marry. The Nightshade diamond is her legacy passed down from an aunt. No one believes it is cursed, but strange things do occur.
The next half of the book jumps back to the present and our reformed thief finds the unlucky but spectacular gem. Of course she finds it in the middle of setting up a gem show on Rick's estate for the V&A museum. Old lovers, fear of diamonds, and and loving Rick keep Sam on her toes and us reading.
This is a twice told tale written with such creativity and intrigue that you will not want to miss it. This book combines Enoch's love of historical romance mystery and her current saga of Rick, the billionaire, and Sam, the world-class cat burglar, I'm not so much into historical romance, but this author has a magic touch that draws the reader into the life and times of the characters. You feel you are there, and at the same time you don't want the story to end because there is obviously more to happen, and you feel like you are losing good friends when the story ends. I can't divulge the story line as it runs through two, time separated events, The end of the first part is a whisper of introduction to the second part and if you have followed the exploits of Sam and Rick, you will see the rise of one of the best romantic-mysteries that has come about yet. It is so easy to become involved in the lives of the characters. Don't miss this one!
I have read this series straight through this week, 1-3 then 5 then 4 (cause I thought it was number 5). This book traces two different couples' experiences with a cursed diamond necklace in the Rawley/Addison family 200 years apart; I believe it was an attempt to bring her historical fans into the modern series, but that's okay, it just seemed a bit jarring compared to the modern couple, especially as there has never been anything about his family in any of the other books. I enjoyed the ancestral H very much, even more than our modern day Rick. What bothered me with the first part were some un-regency type things every once in a while, but that was minor. I don't think a young lady of quality in 1814 would have thought about kicking a guy between the legs nor would he have been allowed to call her by a nickname with the first hours of meeting her, but the "true" regencies are a bit stiff and boring to me so I winked at those parts. The modern tale of the diamond was with Samantha and Rick from the Sam Jellicoe series. He's exceptionally rich and she's a "retired" but whining cat burglar turned security expert (oh, but that is so boring for an adrenaline junkie how will I ever live?). I believe up through book 5 she expects everyone else around her to do more changing and adapting for her than she does for them, but that's just me. Each book is enjoyable and you will get pulled into the capers and secondary characters. Suzanne does as little back-filling as possible in each book so that you get the general idea if it is your first one, but not boring the rest of us to tears with repeat information. The writing style is light and easy to read, things do not go swimmingly, ergo a plot; Suzanne develops well-scripted arguments, they are realistic without being painful, and there is always, always make-up sex. I like Rick simply because there are things I don't like about him, and that makes him real (as real as a supremely rich peer of the realm/business tycoon can be)--he isn't always perfect. Again, I believe if I could read a 5 book series back-to-back, that the author is definitely doing something right. You will enjoy both halves of this book, but I would recommend starting at the beginning of the Sam Jellicoe series, unless you think you won't want to read them all, then this one is the most fun and gives you a good flavor for the whole series.
