My expectations were much higher than it lived up to. Ms. Wayne comes across terribly caught up in herself and her neuroses for much of the book -- making the title deceptive, it should have been "Aissa Wayne, All About Me." Despite imperfect, yet loving parents, I found the tone of the book 'whiny.' She focuses a good bit on John Wayne's shortcomings as a father and a man; I didn't understand her need to spotlight her father's seemingly endless need for validation and love from her. And, only her? Not his other kids? The reader gets short-changed in that department as well. There's little mention of her other siblings except that she found Michael terribly difficult and controlling, especially when JW was dying. I saw it through a different lens; as a man protecting the father he loved and making sure things were done as he would have wished. Did he get everything right? Probably not (as is the case in most of these situations); someone always gets their feathers ruffled. Case in point, Aissa mentions JW telling her he wanted to be cremated and whines some more about Michael making the arrangements to have JW buried, but then back-peddles and says that JW never put his wish to be cremated in writing for his final instructions. So what's the problem? If you knew, Aissa, you should have picked up the phone and talked to your brother. In short, much of the book is steeped in self pity and regret ... it's a "don't bother to change the light bulb, I'll just sit here in the dark" philosophy.
Ultimately, I didn't learn much more about John Wayne which defeated the purpose of purchasing the book!

John Wayne My Father Aissa Wayne Steve Delsohn 9780878339594 Books Reviews

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A JOHN WAYNE FAN AND HAVE READ MANY BOOKS RE HIS LIFE. THIS BOOK SHED A NEW LIGHT ON DUKE'S LIFE. IT PRESENTED MR WAYNE IN THE ROLE OF A FATHER AND NOT A MOVIE STAR. I LOVED IT. IT HELPED TO SHOW JOHN WAYNE AS A LOVING FAMILY MAN WITH HIS STRENGTHS AND FAULTS. I'M EVEN A BIGGER FAN OF HIS NOW.
Kept me riveted through the whole book, Aissa was very truthful and real about her life with her family! Loved it!
I own all the books that have been written by, for and to John Wayne. This was the best of them all. It gives an account of the life of at lease one of his children. Instead of it being all about him, for once it was about the people who loved him. I just with all of his children would write something about their life with him. I was especially surprised to see that she thought he beat Ethan and was especially hard on him. Any way, there it is for what it's worth.
This is a story of the love one little girl had for her daddy although we only saw a great star known by 4 generations. He adored her and in the story she tells us of a man we never saw but that is as it should be. We all watched the real John Wayne because on the screen he never played a part....it was John Wayne just as he was. This is one book you will have to get to find out the other side of this great guy. Oh yes he was strong, opinionated, outspoken but above all an honest man. Do it...get the book and enjoy!!!
I wasn't sure what to expect before reading this biography after having read a lengthy one. Daughter Aissa revealed her innate love and respect for her father. She is the only one - of those I have read - who said her father didn't convert to Catholicism on his deathbed. She gave a poignant view of her father and left no doubt of her feelings for him.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys John Wayne's movies, his love for his country and a look at the Duke from a family member.
As a long time John Wayne fan, I don't know how I missed this book when it first came out. Aissa Wayne has written a wonderful and moving tribute to the man she knew as "Daddy"; a loving though old fashioned father who clearly loved his children.

Ms. Wayne has shared not only some great pictures from her family album, she has also given some touching insights to a very complex man. One of the things she shared that I found very touching was his declaration that in their family there were no such things as step-sisters or step brothers that in the Wayne family all his children were consider true siblings loved equally and adored by their father.

I read this book in one sitting, and came away with a feeling it was a true labor of love.
With all the good that could have been written the author chose to dwell on her own continuing childish imaginings. It is sad and real that children do not understand the adult world. But this woman has had time to come to grips with her own childhood and realize that her father was a man. He may have been a star but that was only part of him. All the anguish the author reveals has been felt by many children from all walks of life. To exploit her father in this fashion, I feel is inexcusable.
